Let’s Clarify ‘Wastewater’
When it comes to Wastewater there are all these terms that can cause a whole lot of confusion - what is wastewater, greywater, blackwater and what do we have o do with it to abide by council regulations?
-
Wastewater
Wastewater is ALL water we have used and dirtied that leaves our homes and commercial properties.
-
Blackwater
Blackwater is waste water from toilets, kitchen sinks and dishwashers.
-
Greywater
Water from showers, handbasins and laundry sink & washing machine waste.
Systems that treat ALL Wastewater
-
Septic System
If you live in a rural area on a larger parcel of land and you don’t have access to sewer, chances are that you will need to take care of your wastewater on site yourself. A Septic System is a tank that is burried near your home that all your wastewater goes into. The tank acts as a predigestion vessle, where bactira starts to break down the organic material. The tank is connected to slotted pipe or dome drains filled with gravell that go out onto a leachfield where excess liquid is absorbed by the soil. sizes vary depending on home size, soil absobion capabilities and lay of the land. You will need to get a Land Capability Assessment done by a licenced LCA practitioner.
-
Treatment Plant
A treatment Plant takes the ‘predigestion’ of nutrients a step further and ‘treats’ your wastewater to the point where it can be reused in your garden. It will allow you to irrigate parts of your ornamental gardens and shade trees. Not to be used for your vegetable gardens. These Systems requrie regular maintenance and have a chlorine component.
-
Wormfarm
Wormfarms are as the name suggests Systems that use worms to help break down organic matter. There is a variatey of brands on the market and according to the latest testing they are an excellent choice to clean your wastwater without the use of chemicals. According to the latest test results from A&A Wormfarms they supercede some of the more convetional treatment systems in water quality and soil quality in leachfields produced post treatment. If you are health and environentally conscious and on a property that allows to have a wormfarm as treatment option this might be the system for you!

Grey Water Systems
-
Greywater recycling
Greywater can only be used for 24 hrs therefore it is really important to make sure the system you purchase is not a storage tank. All greywater has to be used within 24 hrs or it goes sceptic and needst to be treated. Greywater can be used in your ornamental garden, depending on what products you use in your home for cleaning and showering and washing it is advised to not use greywater for vegetatble gardens.
-
Grease Traps & Kitchen waste water
If your kitchen water is filtered through a greasetrap prior to going iinto a greywater reuse system then you can use your kitchen waste water in your garden.
-
Eco Friendly cleaning Products
One of the most important things to remember is that anything you pour down the drain will end up in your garden. To look after your garden and soil use products low in salts and phospohrous. Hard bars of soap contain a lot of salts, Look for greywater safe products and see our website for more information on products our greywater system manufacturer recommends.
